Our last day in Samburu was such a special day. Saruni Samburu has guides that are a part of one of the oldest remaining tribes in Africa. The Samburu people are loving, welcoming, and so helpful. They welcomed us into one of their villages to that we could learn about their nomadic way of life.
They welcomed us with songs, dances, and lots of adornments!
After meeting the people, seeing their houses, and talking about what is important to their culture, the kids went through a Warrior Academy. Joelle and Israel learned how to make fire, shoot a bow and arrow, and throw a spear.
We so appreciated how much time they spent with our family. They asked us to take several pictures so that we could share our experience (we made sure it was okay with them). Tourism and visitors help to support the people. Our guide, Simon, was so good with our kids. He taught all of us so much about the Samburu culture throughout our stay.
After visiting the Samburu village, we went back to the lodge to rest for a while. We decided to go out on a short drive that afternoon (thinking we wouldn’t see anything) and were welcomed by the cheetahs!
Look how gorgeous this mama is! She was so long and slender… very different from the males we would see later on in our trip!
We ended up driving to the river again that evening because so many animals are either coming or going.
Much to our surprise we saw four lions relaxing together very close to a herd of elephants. Every time that we had seen them before they were sleeping, but we got to see these move around a little bit.
Well, a mama elephant was NOT happy that the lions were so close to her herd. She ran towards them, trumpeted, and flapped her ears. I was shocked! They ended up moving back a little bit. The other elephants were not even bothered by the lions being so close… I guess they realize how big they actually are!
The standoff between the lions and elephants was pretty fascinating and made for a wonderful end to our time in Samburu! We were so sad to leave the area, but we had more adventures ahead ๐
Extraordinary Journeys definitely outdid themselves and planned every moment so well! Samburu will forever be in our hearts! I’ll show you a little more of where we stayed before I go…
This was the view from where we had our meals. They cooked a three course meal for every lunch and dinner. The food was amazing and the service was incredible… seriously the nicest people we’ve ever met!
You can see the lodge we stayed in the background of this next photo. It had a living room, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. It overlooked the valley and had gorgeous views.
In our spare time, the kids loved playing with rocks and sticks. After Warrior Academy they had so much fun practicing everything they learned!
