Day 2 in Samburu is now one that I will never ever forget. We woke up around 6:30am for a morning drive around Samburu National Reserve. We were having such a wonderful morning. We had seen so many animals and had a beautiful breakfast by the river. We had baboons walking right past us, elephants come up to drink, and watched crocodiles in the river. Fast forward a few hours and Israel mentioned something about Jared’s birthday. It hit Joelle and I like a ton of bricks… we had no idea that it was July 25th! We hadn’t said anything to Jared about his birthday! Since we weren’t carrying our phones or watches around, the date was completely lost on us. Needless to say, we felt HORRIBLE!
So, here I am formally telling Jared “HAPPY 36TH BIRTHDAY!!!” PS… How cute is it that they were matching on his birthday and we didn’t even plan it, ha!
Anyways, this was the day of the cats! We saw cheetahs, a leopard, and a lion!
The cheetah had her cubs with her and they were PRECIOUS! Look how good this picture is that Jared snapped.
Speaking of beautiful cats… look at this leopard. She was stunning. Our tracker/driver noticed leopard prints and a drag line. He followed it to where she had her meal hanging in a tree. It was incredible.
So at least Jared got to see a leopard with her kill on his birthday, ha!
Another huge highlight of the day was seeing a massive herd of elephants.
We ended the day at the river where we found a lion behind a bush. Right on the other side there were so many different animals that could have been her dinner!
They had no idea that she was just a few feet away from them. When I noticed how many animals were all in one place I started to tear up. Not because they could all be a lion’s dinner, but because it was just incredible to see so many different animals together. It was like a real live Lion King moment! We felt so blessed to be there in that moment.
