We woke up early on day two so that we could take a morning drive to the river. The only time we had any rain on our trip was when we were staying in a tent… go figure, ha! Thankfully the rain did not stop us, and it did help cover up the noise that the hyenas and wildebeests made ALL night long. We learned quickly that we all needed to have a fan or noise machine app on our phones! When you get thousands of wildebeests and hundreds of hyenas together, they can be quite loud!
On our drive to the river we saw a few hyenas scavenging around. They found some scraps that were left over from the day before.
We were SHOCKED when we got to the river. There were HUNDREDS of hippos and they were LOUD. Even though we were high above them, it was still a little scary at first. Once we realized that they could not get to us, we enjoyed the sights, sounds, and breakfast!
We got to see a lot of baby hippos and several hippos playing/sparing.
After breakfast we began our drive back to the lodge. We came across probably 15-20 giraffes. Well, several of the boys decided it was a good time to fight. They were thrashing their necks and horns into each other. It was quite amusing to watch, but it looked so painful!
And then we saw… MORE LIONS! The wonderful thing about the Mara is that the plains make it pretty easy to find animals. The guides know where to stop, how to track, and what to look for.
This group of lions decided to take a rest in a tree. Two of the girls got themselves settled into one tree together. Then a boy came along and ruined all of their peace. He was moving all of the branches, shaking everything, and getting all up in their space. It reminded me of all the boys I know, ha!
It was definitely a treat to see the lions perched up in a tree.
I’ll end with this picture from day 2 at Saruni Wild. It is a perfect picture of what you see on a safari in Kenya!
