Our last day in Borana was more special than we ever could have imagined! Here is how it all started…
We bundled up to do a drive around 4:30pm. The kids had tea and cake at the lodge before loading into our vehicle.
We had heard that some of the lions had hunted the night before, so our guide took off looking for the them. Since lions guard their kill until they are finished eating, we knew we had a good chance of finding them. Here’s what we saw when we drove up…
There were four lions sleeping all around a zebra that they had hunted the night before. Lions sleep A LOT, so we thought we would just watch them snooze for a little bit.
Well, boy were we wrong. After just a few minutes, a couple of the lions started to eat. I know it sounds gruesome because zebras are SOOOOO beautiful. BUT… a lion has to hunt and eat! It was a little sad though because the zebra they hunted was pregnant. We watched one of the lions carry the unborn baby zebra in her mouth. If only we could handpick which animals were hunted, ha!
A young male lion got up and began tugging and pulling on the zebra. It was very much like he was showing off… especially when we noticed how full his belly was from earlier that day!
He was absolutely gorgeous! Look at those majestic eyes!
We can all still smell the zebra when we look at the pictures. It is not a smell that is easily forgotten, ha! I also really love how defined the spots are on this lion’s legs.
We ended the night having dinner in our room at the lodge. They served an African-themed dinner and it was delicious… definitely reminded us of the food we had while in the Congo. I must say that the food at Borana Lodge was definitely our favorite!
