For the past two years we have traveled to Maui in March to see the humpback whales. Every year over 10,000 humpback whales migrate to the shallow waters of Maui and it is MAGICAL! You can see whales breaching, splashing their tails, and slapping their flippers from basically anywhere on the island. It doesn’t matter if I’ve seen it 1 or 1,000 times, it never ceases to amaze me!
It’s been a while since I’ve shared some of our Maui favorites, so let me give an update on our must-dos and must-eats while in Maui.
Where We Stay
We love to stay in a condo in Kapalua when we go to Maui. It’s calm, peaceful, and not overly crowded. As of 2022, we have stayed in Kapalua during four of our trips. I don’t always recommend places we’ve stayed at, but when we go somewhere time and time again, it’s worth mentioning! There are beautiful trails through the rocks that have breathtaking views. The kids like to go on at least one walk a day so they can watch the whales, jump on the rocks, and sift through the tide pools. It’s the best of both worlds… rocks to the left and a beach to the right!
Now let’s talk about our top restaurants:
- Mama’s Fish House
- Duke’s Beach House (get the Hula Pie)
- Paia Fish Market
- Hula Grill (get the Hula Pie)
- The Gazebo (breakfast): We actually order The Gazebo to go now because the line is just so long. Get the White Chocolate Macademia Nut Pancakes and Fried Rice Plate)
- Slappy Cakes (breakfast)
- Leoda’s (get the Lilikoi pie)
- Burger Shack on D. T. Fleming Beach
- Flatbread Pizza Company in Paia
- Julia’s Banana Bread
- Ulalani’s Shave Ice
- Da Kitchen
- Monkey Pod
- Maui Banana Bread Company
- Down the Hatch
As far as things to do, we tend to be pretty low-key on vacations. We typically go to the beach in the morning and for a walk on the rocks in the afternoon. The kids like to chill and read while we get ready for dinner. BUT, we definitely recommend Blue Water Maui for whale watching. We’ve been on three tours with them and have enjoyed every single one!
